| 説明 | Company A, 3rd Illinois CavalryThe Pratt Republican, January 30, 1908, Pg. 1Obituary Thomas McElwain was born in Windham, Mass., Dec. 25, 1832. In early life he removed to Ohio and attended Oberlin College for a time, then removed to Antioch College at Yellow Springs, Ohio. Leaving college, he went to Illinois and enlisted in the 3rd Illinois cavalry in 1861, in which he served until thrown from a horse and injured in 1862. In 1863 he was married to Ellen M. Thair at Chatham, Ills. To this union were born four children, of whom but one survives him. He came to Kansas in 1885 and has resided in this county ever since. He died January 25, 1908, aged 75 years, one month. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. M. Leonard, assisted by Rev. McCormick of the M. E. church and Rev. Fischer of the Baptist church. The members of the Masonic order held a brief service at the close of the church service. The church building was too small to accommodate the sympathizing friends who wished to attend the services and the floral tributes to the memory of the departed were magnificent testimonials of the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The remains were interred in Green Lawn and a noble character has gone out from among us-a great-hearted man has passed to his eternal rest. |
