説明 | Ithaca and Cornell. Today Ithaca metropolitan area has around 140,000 people. The major hotel in town, built in the Greek Style, is called the Clinton. The Clintons are an old money, aristocratic New York Family. DeWitt Clinton was Governor of New York from 1817-27. He was a conservative opposed to the “democratic” ideas of Presidents Martin van Buren and Andrew Jackson in the 1830s. Bill Clinton is not related to the aristocratic New York Clintons. The city used to produce guns, clocks and National Cash Registers. Cornell University was founded as a private University by Ezra Cornell in 1865. These days it also has a campus in NYC these days. It has a large graduate school and has produced a number of notable scholars and Rhodes Scholars. It is ranked fourth in the world for producing graduates that go on to obtain doctorates. The black writer Toni Morrison went to Cornell. The Cornell Plantations along Forest Home drive (off East Avenue) consist of 10 hectares of botanic gardens and 60 hectares of arboretum. The plantings go back to 1865. Cornell has always specialised in science and agriculture. The arboretum specialises in New York flora and has specimen trees. One of the core collections is Maples- Acer, including Red Maple (Acer rubrum), Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) and Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum). It also has a Chesnut, Walnut and Oak collection. The botanic garden section specialises in herbs, conifers, rhododendrons, flowers etc. The diagram on the right is the Sugar Maple- Acer Saccharum, leaves, pods, twigs and trunk. |
