| 説明 | The area around Robertstown was declared as a hundred in 1867. Settlement progressed very slowly with the town developing from 1871. Mr Roberts opened the first store here in 1871- hence the town’s name. In 1874 Mr Roberts opened the post office and Robert’s Town changed to Robertstown. Early businesses included a butchery, a boot maker, a chaff mill, a wheat store, a saddlery, bakery etc. The Robertstown Hotel opened in 1885 and still trades. Westphalen’s Store has had many uses and it was the Eudunda Farmers’ Store from 1919 to 1983. Mr Robert’s second General Store was built in 1900 and still operates as a general store with all the old counters and shelving as shown in the booklet of photographs for this tour. The fine old National Bank was built in 1915, and the Peace Memorial Hall opened in 1923. Prior to 1917 when the government enforced closure of all Lutheran Schools Robertstown had two Lutheran churches and two Lutheran schools. The state public school opened in 1923 and still operates. The Zion Lutheran Church started services in 1871 with the church opening in 1875. It split into two congregations in 1884, St. Johns from 1885 and Zion. The two Lutheran churches amalgamated in 1956. The Zion Church was demolished but the cemetery remains. The amalgamated church is now known as the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Robertstown also had a Methodist Church from 1895. The Methodists started using the Lutheran Church in 1880 but they were not allowed to use the organ so they built their own church in 1895! Robertstown is typical of a half English and half German background town of the 1870s. This quiet little town featured in the national press in 1971 when an armed man held up the National Bank. The robber was not able to access the locked safe but he escaped with $800 from the teller. He was arrested 9 months later in Adelaide! The National Bank in Robertstown closed in 1976. |
