説明Bristolville, OH 44402Trumbull County Bristol Township Park, Rt 45 & 88.The village at the center of the township is dominated by a town square much like typical New England village greens. The "Center" as it is often referred to, is named Bristolville. Several memorials are located in the town park, but the centerpiece is the Civil War Monument. It was the first Civil War memorial to be erected in the state of Ohio. In 1863, the good folk of Bristolville, erected the monument to honor thirteen local men they called "Defenders of the Union from Bristol, Ohio." The square-shaped stone monument is topped with a funerary urn and decorated with crossed swords, cannon and rifles. It's interesting to note that John Kagy (a.k.a. Kagi) (1835 - 1859), an abolitionist, was a staunch follower John Brown and second in command of Brown's movement. His father, Abraham, was a respected village blacksmith in Bristolville, Ohio, whose family was of Swiss descent, the name being originally Kagi. John A. Kagi was born at Bristolville, Trumbull county, Ohio, March 15, 1835; and was killed October 17, 1859 by the U.S. Marines in the infamous raid at Harper's Ferry. The name of Jacob Kagy appears on the monument, and as near as I can figure was the older brother of the famed John Kagy. More here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Henry_KagiKagi's sister Barbara Kagy Mayhew and her husband Allen Mayhew, also born and raised in Bristolville, migrated to Nebraska City, Nebraska in the early 1850s. With Kagi's help, they created a cave under their cabin to shelter fugitive slaves on their way to freedom in Canada. Their 1855 cabin has been restored as the Mayhew Cabin museum, and is the only site in Nebraska recognized by the National Park Service as a station on the Underground Railroad.More here www.mayhewcabin.org/index.htm
