| 説明 | Standing on Sherman Avenue north of Arlington House, looking at Arlington Woods. At Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington County, Virginia, United States.John Parke Custis purchased the land which formed the Arlington estate in 1778. He was the son of Daniel Parke and Martha (Dandridge) Custis. Daniel died on July 8, 1757, and Martha married Virginia militia officer George Washington on January 6, 1759. John became their foster son, and six-year-old John considered George Washington his father. John Parke Custis died on November 5, 1781, and his six-month old son, George Washington Parke Custis, was adopted by the Washingtons.George Washington Parke Custis inherited a third of his father's land, while Martha got another third and George another third. When George and Martha Washington died, G.W.P. inherited even more land. These estates were huge, and Arlington was too small to be self-sustaining. So G.W.P. decided to turn Arlington into a "family seat". He retained the lowlands by the Potomac River for farming and slave housing. The steep hill to the east of and the deep ravines to the north and northwest of the house he left as a semi-cultivate park."The Park" had a vast lawn beneath it, carriage drives and footpaths, and gazebos and picnicking areas.During the American Civil War, most of The Park was cut down for firewood, but large swaths in the ravines remained untouched. These areas were part of the Army-run Arlington National Cemetery until 1933. Arlington House and its grounds were transferred to the National Park Service. In May 1964, the Secretary of Defense ordered the 25 acres of "Arlington Woods" to be preserved in perpetuity as an appropriate backdrop to Arlington House. DOD transferred the Arlington Woods to the Park Service in May 1975.The Park Service returned the "Arlington Woods" back to the cemetery in 1995. With the cemetery running out of space for burials, this area could be cleared of trees, the land graded, and extensive new below-ground burial space recovered. |
