| 説明 | Detail of the face of the Nurses Memorial in Section 21 of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. The Nurses Memorial was dedicated on November 8, 1938. The monument was conceived by Ida Hube, a former member of the Army Nurse Corps, in 1928. Member nurses of the Army Nurse Corps and the Navy Nurse Corps donated the funds to build the monument. It was sculpted by Frances Luther Rich, daughter of film star Irene Rich, from pink Tennessee marble. The 11-foot-high Art Deco style monument took 1.5 years to sculpt. Stonecutter Giovanni Garatti did the actual carving. Instead of using the "point system" that sculptors use to accurately enlarge maquettes into full-size sculptures, Garatti scultped the head free-hand. This left the bust too narrow for the remainder of the statue. Rich then commissioned Parke Hanner to sculpt the body in a slightly smaller, narrower shape. The memorial monument was dedicated to nurses of the United States Army and Navy. It was rededicated in 1971 include Air Force nurses. |
