| 説明 | Built as the residence of department store owner, land developer, and three-time Ann Arbor Mayor, William S. Maynard -- who was probably the richest man in town when he committed suicide in 1866. Maynard's three additions to the City of Ann Arbor encompass much of what is now called "The Old West Side." In 1836 he was an organizer of the Ann Arbor Land Company, which lured the University with a gift of forty acres of land for its original campus. Maynard Street bears his name. The house had been the Arlington Hotel (later a rooming house) before the Elks acquired it for their lodge and drinking place. |
