| 説明 | Although the Titanic never actually visited Liverpool, she was registered there and bore the city's name on her stern, as she belonged to the White Star Line, one of the main shipping companies , which had its headquarters in Liverpool.After the sinking of the liner on April 12th 1912, the White Star Line and the Institute of Marine Engineers jointly commissioned a memorial to be built at Pier Head as a tribute to the 244 engine room staff who had lost their lives by staying at their posts to supply electricity and other services to the ship, in order to keep lights on and pumps working for as long as possible, so that others had a better chance of survival.The monument was designed by Sir William Goscombe John, a Welsh sculptor, who designed several memorials. This one takes the form of a granite column and was dedicated to, ,'All Heroes of the Marine Engine Room', and remembers not just those men lost on the Titanic but also the many others who lost their life during the conflict of WWI. It incorporates figures of ordinary working men ; one of the first memorials to do so. |
