説明The iconic photo of the Argentine-born Marxist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara - wearing his black beret, bearded, with straggly hair and saintly eyes - was subsequently turned into a poster that, through the 1970s, seemed to appear on the walls of student bedsits more dependably than rising damp. The photo was taken at a memorial service in Havana in 1960 by Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez, the Cuban celebrity photographer turned revolutionary, who styled himself "Korda". It then turned into a consumerism industry, with the story behind it now the subject of an engaging new documentary, called Chevolution. It's now streaming on Netflix, and tells the tale about the most reproduced image in the history of photography: the Guerillero Heroico (shot on a Leica M2 with a 90mm lens, loaded with Kodak Plus-X). Korda became Che's official photographer, taking many, many famous shots (though the one above, in today's postcard photo, was taken by Rene Burri), and nobody thought much of that particular photo apart from the photographer himself. It didn't appear in Cuban newspapers and Korda kept it in his personal collection until the late Sixties when Italian publisher, Giangiacomo Felrinelli, asked his permission to publish it; and from there, was seen by Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick, who turned it into the iconic poster of the then-martyred revolutionary leader, when it became the symbol of protest and dissent. Korda, who was a lifelong supporter of the ideals Che eventually died for, claimed no payment for the photo. And the rest, as the say, is history: It then became one of the world’s most universally merchandized and objectified images, found on an endless array of items, including t-shirts, hats, posters, tattoos, and even bikinis, paradoxically contributing to the consumer culture Che himself despised.
