| 説明 | Padthaway. Padthaway sheep station was established by Robert Lawson (1813-1876). He held the land under occupation licence from the 28th January 1847. The name means in the local Aboriginal language 'good water'. Robert, a successful Scottish businessman, moved into the area with his wife Eliza in 1847. He acquired 21,500 hectares and subsequently increased the holding to 32,000 hectares. He built a relatively small cottage in 1847 and lived in the cottage for the next thirty years. He died in 1876. His wife built the mansion in 1882. She died in 1913. The original Lawson cottage nestles in a glade and overlooks the courtyard surrounded by the old stables, the original kitchen, the workshop, the blacksmiths shop and the overseer’s rooms. The homestead garden was redesigned by the Melbourne landscape gardener Ellis Stones in 1948 with formal areas, walled gardens, orchard, patio, glade, hedges and English trees. Robert Lawson intended to build his family a majestic residence, reflecting the family's success but it was Eliza in her late 50's who achieved this. She built a fine 13 stand woolshed of local limestone, and a 22 roomed homestead. Under the front entrance the keystone tells a story as only the initials of E L are carved there. By the 1890's Padthaway was freehold but it is no longer in the Lawson family. The lows of the wool industry took their toll on the Lawson family's resources and land was sold from the late 1950's. The Seppelt and Hardy families started purchasing the land for viticulture and the small township of Padthaway was gazetted. The district is now a thriving premium South Australian viticultural district with approximately 3,300 hectares under vines. Southcorp, BRL Hardy, Orlando Wyndham and Beringer Blass - all have holdings in the district on land once farmed by the Lawsons.Groundwater in the Padthaway area is important for agriculture. This aquifer is at risk of being polluted because the water table is only 5 metres from the surface. Groundwater samples are collected annually from 7 bores in the Padthaway area and tested by the government for nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, arsenic and salinity. |
