The Pavilion is located in the Lower Town area of the city. Established in 1898, it is the oldest gallery in Southeast Europe and the only purpose-built gallery in Zagreb designed specifically to accommodate large scale exhibitions.Though finally completed and opened in 1898, the first possibility of an art-pavilion in Zagreb was roused by plans to celebrate Hungary's millennium (1896). The original iron framework was initially constructed in Hungary before eventually finding its way to its permanent home in Zagreb. Though not exclusively domestic, most of the temporary exhibitions are Croatian and it is the Pavilion's dedication to the celebration of national art that makes it one of Zagreb's most important cultural points of interest. |
