| 説明 | Heading towards Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.Wall and gate.King James's Gate was built in 1687, probably as a reconstruction of the older Point gate on the same site, to control access to Portsmouth from The Point. When the town walls were demolished the gate was moved to a location in St. Michaels Road. At a later, unknown, date it was moved again and is now located roughly half a mile away from its original position, forming part of the boundary of United Services Ground in Burnaby Road. During the moves, much of the original ornate stonework has been lost.From Burnaby Road while in traffic. Best I could get from the car.Grade II listed structure.King James Gate, Portsmouth PORTSMOUTH SZ6399 BURNABY ROAD 774-1/12/4 (East side) King James Gate II Gate. Dated 1687. Originally positioned in Broad Street, demolished c1860 and re-erected in present position early C20. Ashlar with later brick backing. Horizontal rusticated stone. At centre is a tall round stone arched opening with moulded architrave, incised voussoirs with keystone and moulded impost, flanking paired full height Corinthian pilasters, entablature and block parapet projecting over pilasters. Each of the lower flanking wings has a projecting round stone arched opening with keystone, imposts and flanking pilasters, recessed C20 2-leaf 5-panelled door. Moulded cornice and block parapet. Centre archway has 2-leaf curved ornamental iron gates with scrolls, marginal pierced motifs and spear uprights.
