| 説明 | A glass of Grätzer from Westbrook Brewing Company in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, on draft at The Rake, London.Grätzer is a historic beer style named after the city of its origin: Grätz in Prussia (what is now Grodzsizk Wielkopolski in Poland). Though very popular a hundred years ago it had virtually died out by the end of the 20th century. This top-fermented beer style was characterized by its high hop bitterness and rich smokiness, but unlike the rauchbiers of Bamberg, the Grätzer was brewed from 100% oak-smoked wheat malt, not beechwood-smoked barley. I have earlier tried another American grätzer (see this review) so I was anxious to try the Westbrook version.Westbrook Grätzer has a strength of just 3.4% abv, making this a potential session beer. It poured a hazy yellow color with an offwhite head. It smelled of bacon with a touch of lemon. Mouthfeel was light, with a soft carbonation. Flavor started out with a fruity sourness, typical lemon, with a dose of bonfire smoke. The smoke character was a bit too strong, drowning out the fruity and bitter flavors of the beer. Still a very interesting take on this old style of beer. |
