| 説明 | Yesterday, on the way home from a week's worth of field work in Quakertown, PA, I avoided the PA turnpike and took a scenic route through the heart of Pennsylvania coal mining country. I had always been fascinated by the story of Centralia, PA, and decided to stop for some photos. Centralia, PA, has had a fire burning under its surface since 1962. A small surface fire spread to a vein of coal and erupted in its pit several days later. The fire has continued despite many attempts to extinguish it. The fire could continue for nearly a century or more, however, recent research has found a possible solution. Read more here. What once was the downtown of Centralia is now an empty street. There are only several residents existing in the actual town, a church, fire department, and St. Ignatius cemetary (pictured previously). All other buildings have been demolished and residents relocated. I drove through the streets - it's bizarre and depressing. You can see the remains of some home foundations, mostly overgrown with weeds. The smoke was only visible (yesterday) at the detoured portion of highway (large cracks) and in the back portion of the cemetary. It was a fairly hot and hazy day and I didn't get the chance to walk extensively as I would have liked. There is a sulfur odor in the air, it tickles the throat somewhat if you're not used to it, I suppose. I don't think I would want to get used to it - can't be safe. I'm pictured here on the famous green bench which sits near a memorial and the homes of several of the diehard residents. |
