| 説明 | Huge autumn colour in a Sugar Maple in St Albans Vermont This small city known as the ‘maple syrup’ capital of the world was settled after the War of Independence from 1785. Historically its claim to fame is the so called ‘St Albans Raid’ during the Civil War when a Confederate Officer, Bennett Young who had escaped to Canada, recruited some rebels to attack St Albans- the farthest north incident of the Civil War. He had orders from the Confederate Capital. In October 1864 several men arrived from Canada and stayed at the local hotel. By the end of the week 21 Confederate cavalrymen were staying there. They then robbed the town’s 3 banks, stealing over $200,000. Some rebels held the townspeople hostage on the village green. One resident was killed. But the money did not get back to the Confederate Army. When they crossed back into Canada they were arrested by the British but they were deemed to be legitimate soldiers, so the British refused to extradite the Confederates back to America but some money was returned to Vermont. |
