| 説明 | The U.S. Capitol's outer dome is crowned by a nineteen1/2-foot female figure representing "Freedom".The statue was commissioned in 1856 from Thomas Crawford, an American sculptor working in Rome, and cast in bronze by Clark Mills at a foundry near DC.On December 2, 1863, during the American Civil War, the last of the statue's five sections was put in place on top of the Capitol dome, reportedly to a salute of 35 guns answered by the guns of the 12 Union forts surrounding Washington. Facing East, "Freedom" stands atop a cast-iron globe encircled with one of the national mottoes, 'E pluribus unum': out of many, one.DSC_0006 |
