| 説明 | Last night’s meeting in the Minnowburn queen rearing project was all about drones. So I thought I’d just post a picture of this guy just emerging 24 days after being laid as an egg. Drones tend to be maligned by beekeepers as a waste of space but they are a vital component of our project.The aim of the group is be self sufficient in Queens that are of a known genetic provenance consistent with the native Irish black bee lineage of the Apis mellifera mellifera (AMM) subspecies. The idea is that no one will need to import Queens (with the inherent risk of disease and bad tempered hybrids) if we can raise enough ourselves. Jonathan was talking about the need to have the area flooded with genetically appropriate drones. Each virgin queen will mate with about 18 drones – on the wing, on mating flights, probably within a mile or so of the apiary, there is no way of controlling this process up close so we have to push the statistics in our favour by raising as many drones as possible that are “suitable” (i.e. Irish black bee AMM) and effectively flooding the area. This evening we were moving “genetically good” drone comb with developing brood into the stronger colonies (not necessarily the genetically good colonies) and adding drone comb with no brood to the genetically good colonies to get these queens laying drone eggs for the summer. This will maximise good drone production. We need to get on top of this now because the drones are not sexually mature until 2 weeks post emergence from the sealed brood (>5 weeks after the queen has laid the eggs in the drone cells). So the work we do now and in coming weeks is to get drones ready for action over the summer.Some of the drone brood was just on the point of hatching as it was being moved – this guy was eagerly trying to get out . |
