| 説明 | There are about 20 statues spread around Montrose, this one is of Sir Robert Peel, best remembered for his achievements detailed on the plaque seen on his plinth: -SIR ROBERT PEEL"He initiated and supported the establishment of the Metropolitan Police Force and abolished the tax on food called “Corn Laws” . Prime Minister for only one year he died as a result of a riding accident. His statue marks the position of the Burgh Tollbooth demolished in 1835."I saw nothing to connect Sir Robert with Montrose so his statue may be another example of public recognition from a grateful nation. Still he was responsible for the formation of the modern Conservative Party, an endangered species in these parts. The statue is the work of Alexander Handyside Ritchie and was unveiled in 1855. |
