説明This photo was taken in eastern Madagascar. The soil is formed in gneiss rock on a 5% slope near the crest of a hill and vegetated by native forest. Clay contents gradually decrease with depth. The CEC7/kg clay in the control section is low enough to qualify as an oxic horizon however the sand fraction contains only 71% resistant minerals and 29% weatherable minerals, mainly phyllosilicates Base saturation percentage (CEC7) is less than 8 in all horizons and Al saturation exceeds 60% in all horizons. Although extremely infertile these soils are used for shifting, slash-and-burn cultivation wherein the ashes provide available inorganic ions and neutralizing affect for one or perhaps two food crops. At that time the subsistence farmers abandon the site to native vegetation that is reported to take 30 or more years before enough biomass is grown that the slash-and-burn scenario can be repeated.
