Nanni, the last of the old Bologna bookshops, is in the via de’ Musei, under the dramatic-sounding Portico della Morte - the Portico of Death (it gets its name from the old hospital of Santa Maria della Morte). The young Pier Paulo Pasolini used to hang out here: "My most beautiful memories of Bologna are under the Portico of Death. It reminds me of Dostoevsky's Idiot; of Shakespeare's Macbeth - of my first books. At fifteen I started to buy my books there; so beautiful because never again, throughout our lives, do we read with the joy with which we read our first books." |
