| 説明 | The first prison built on this site was the work of a 12th. century archbishop of York. In later years the Moot Hall was the scene of criminal trials with convicted felons being escorted the 50 yards or so to this place of unhappy confinement. During the Wars of the Roses, the Duke of Somerset was executed in the market place following the Battle of Hexham in 1463 so I expect the prison would be busy during these eventful times and It seems to me that the prison is a lot bigger than might be necessary to deal with Hexham's medieval riff-raff. Perhaps some unlucky Scottish raiders were familiar with its sturdy portals too? |
