| 説明 | This is the glow from the radium paint remaining on my approx. 1930-vintage Elgin Mermaid 202 watch.Radium paint is relatively harmless, except to some unfortunate early 20th century female dial painters who were instructed to point their brushes by placing the tip on the tongue. The accumulated dosage was eventually sufficient to cause a slow nasty death, in many cases.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radium_GirlsTo make this image, the watch and camera were in a dark room. When the shutter was opened, a radio-triggered flash in the other end of the room fired, bounced from the ceiling. I had to set the flash to its lowest power (1/64th), and placed a thick block of foam over the flash head to further diminish the light output. Even this very low flash setting was enough to dimly illuminate the watch, which was in an opaque photo tent. I wanted to give the watch face a faint exposure to place the radium glow more in context.The shutter was open for almost 9 minutes.ISO was boosted to 6400.The lens was wide open at f/5.This very long, highly boosted exposure was necessary to record the very faint radium glow remaining. The “noise” you see in the image was caused by the long/fast exposure, and was partially reduced by running the image file through a rather good app called Neat Image.The minute hand is the source of by far the brightest light. The hour hand is missing the central portion that would have held the paint. It appears that the numbers were also painted, as there are remnants of paint on the 5. Most of the dots by each number are still at least very slightly active.The watch's crystal is missing, which is probably why the radium paint and the face in general are in such poor condition. |
