| 説明 | We lament the quality of contemporary discourse as ungrammatical, imprecise and ineloquent. Happily, a sense of history has infused our language, in the form of an homage to Henry Clay Frick. A surprise to be sure, since the turn-of-the-twentieth-century industrialist and art collector clearly qualified for the upper reaches of the hated "two per cent." Even so, his name repeatedly finds a place in laudatory phrases: "Holy Frick!" "Frickin' awesome!" "I could give a flying Frick." Whether or not this development in our vocabulary represents a revisionist view of Mr. Frick, he would surely be proud to have evolved into a noun, an adjective, an adverb and - most colorfully - a transitive verb. |
