| 説明 | Photo credit: Comunidad Wiwinik, Nicaragua. David Viñuales, 2007. Because of the unpredictable weather, Oxfam GB, together with the local organization Acción Médica, Centro Humboldt and Intermón Oxfam, is helping the populations of northeastern Nicaragua to install an early warning system in the communities settled on the riverbanks of the Bocay and Coco. This system allows the communities to identify when the level of the waters is rising and what to do in case of an emergency. The Miskitos indigenous people of Central America have been living and farming according to natural rhythms for centuries, since their state was formed in the early 1600s. But now something is going badly wrong. In the past few years they have no longer been able to predict the seasons so they don't know when to plant. Traditional signs found in nature – white cranes, flowering avocado plants, silver fish and flashes of lightning - are no longer heralding the rains. |
