説明Information from the eBay listing (March 16, 2013):"Another fine letter from Alexander F. McEwan at Ann Arbor on June 21, 1885 with postal cover all in GD condition. Letter references the annual meeting of the Peninsular Society; how they are having a brisk thunderstorm as he writes this letter; much mud; campus activities; about commencement and the graduating class speeches; how the President's speeches are tedious; many of the students are leaving for home disrupting his boarding house; tired of eating boiled eggs and bread; reference to the Glee Club returning from an excursion, etc."I won this letter in the eBay auction, so here it is in full: Ann Arbor, Mich., June 21, [18]85 Dear Father and Mother: If the days go as fast this week as they did last I shan't have much time to get homesick before I actually get home. The annual meeting of the Peninsular Society which is the principal thing that has kept me here occurs on Wednesday but whether or not I can get away by Thursday I don't know yet but I certainly shall get away as soon as possible, for Ann Arbor grows more desolate each day, for every day sees someone go without anyone coming to take his place. It has started in for the usual commencement week rain and is indeed doing nobly, thundering, blowing etc. while I write. If it is a choice though between mud or dust I should decide immediately for the mud. The dust always reminds me of the dust on the main street at Mackinac. One can't step outside the door without taking the polish off from his shoes. The hour of the address to the graduating class has been changed from afternoon, when it has always been given before, to evening. I don't know whether I can muster up courage enough to go over or not; for it is going to be very warm unless there is a great and sudden change in the weather and every degree of heat added gives an additional two degrees of hardness to those seats which are hard enough at the best. And then Prexy's [James B. Angell] stock of moral maxims can't be unlimited so that the address I imagine will be of somewhat the same character as the two years that I have heard it.My chum went home the middle of last week and so many of the boys have followed him that we have had to give up boarding in the house and go outside. I don't object, however, for the change in board is very agreeable. I expect to surprise you by my appetite when I get home, for I am getting decidedly tired of boiled eggs and baker's bread. The boys on the glee club arrived back yesterday from their little trip and report a very pleasant time. Whether they sing well or not I don't know as I didn't attend their concert here. They have practiced so much in our Parlors that I didn't care to hear them in public. If I find that I can't get home by Thursday night I will let you know, but don't see anything to prevent me.Your affectionate son, Alex F. McEwan.
