Bright Angel Trailhead Project Manager Vicky Stinson and Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Dave Uberuaga view the stone masonry walls alongside the pathway that leads from the parking area to Kolb Studio. At one time this was the driveway into the Kolb Studio garage.Five stone masonry walls, totaling more than 2,500 sf were constructed as part of this project. Two of the five walls were retaining walls that were constructed where former historic walls had collapsed: one north of the Kolb Garage. All of the stone is native Kaibab Limestone and came from material excavated from the site, or from stone piled at the park’s former landfill, which was harvested from previous construction projects. Each and every stone was hand tooled to create a roughly rectangular shape. The stone blocks range in size from a minimum dimension of 2” to 36”. The wall along the Bright Angel Trail has the largest stones, some of which weigh over a ton. Because of the steep site conditions at along the Bright Angel Trail, the retaining wall had to be constructed from the back side. Each stone was strapped to the bucket of a backhoe which was stationed above the wall, and was gently lowered into place. Sometimes setting one stone took several backhoe maneuvers to allow the masons to chisel the stone to get a perfect fit. The trailhead rehabilitation project began on September 4, 2012. The area will be under construction through April 2013 and will be officially dedicated on May 18, 2013.Work includes: a 90 car paved parking lot around the Bright Angel Lodge cabins; new restrooms and a meeting plaza with shade structures; and burial of utilities; an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible Rim Trail connection between the Hermits Rest Route Transfer shuttle bus stop and the Kolb Studio; reconstruction of stone masonry retaining walls near the Kolb Studio and near the southwest trailhead of the Bright Angel Trail.
