説明 | The rocks at Portland Head Light in Maine are from the Cushing Formation. The Cushing Formation was formed approximately 471 million years ago during the Ordovician Period. It was formed a result of many volcanic eruptions. This means that the volcanic eruptions that produced the Cushing Formation occurred before the Himalayas or Alps had formed, before the Atlantic Ocean existed, before the dinosaurs lived, and before the first land plants had evolved. The volcanos that must have existed near here at that ancient time have long since been eroded; all that is left is a layer of volcanic debris preserved in the rocks. The Cushing Formation looks like a series of rocks joined together around the border of the islands. The color is typically light grey, almost beige, but can vary from dark to light. Sometimes the rocks may be smooth but are also sharp and distorted. |
