| 説明 | 2-16-13 Awards Event•We all worked hard to develop the Challenge as a well-coordinated program that had easily accessible information, training, and tremendous oversight from technical experts and law enforcement.•There were definitely a few unknowns for us launching into the Python Challenge – what would the actual interest be in folks wanting to participate – well, we have a better understanding of that with nearly 1,600 participants from 38 states. We even have had someone sign up from Canada. The interest is more than we could have asked for!•Another unknown was what would be the total number of Burmese pythons removed? And what does that mean? Of course every python removed is a great benefit. And we know that it takes a significant investment of time to capture one – as it does for any type of hunt. With 68 Burmese pythons harvested as part of this event, we have an unprecedented number of samples that will help us answer questions about pythons that will make us more effective in removing the snakes from the Everglades ecosystem. And it helps us understand the invasive species issue as a whole.•We are very thankful for the University of Florida partnering with us to serve as the research expert – we look forward to learning more as they investigate the data. I would like to especially thank Dr. Frank Mazzotti, who has been such a champion for addressing Burmese pythons in the Everglades and other invasive species in Florida.FWC Photo by Jorge Pino |
