As there appear to be only four medal ribbons in the bar, this photograph was definitely taken prior to 1977 (when the Queens Silver Jubilee medal was issued), and before the introduction of clip-on ties (circa 1976). ---Thomas Sorley, a native of Stirlingshire, was born in 1916. He joined the Stirlingshire & Clackmannanshire Constabulary as a Constable on 20th June 1935, and was released by the Force for service in the Royal Air Force from May 1943 until August 1945. He returned to his force thereafter and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on 24th February 1950, and then to Inspector on 22nd March 1954. Further promotion followed on 21st October 1957 when he was made Chief Inspector, and on 16th December 1961 he was again promoted to Superintendent.William Paterson, Chief Constable of the Inverness Burgh Police, retired in August 1962, and the Town Council took its time to find a successor. In due course, Mr Sorley was the successful candidate and he took up his new appointment in March 1963.He remained in charge of the Burgh Police force until it was amalgamated with the Inverness-shire Constabulary on 16th November 1968. The County Chief Constable, Mr Andrew L McClure, was appointed Chief Constable of the new Force ("Inverness Constabulary"), and Mr Sorley was made Assistant Chief Constable (and appointed Deputy Chief Constable). These two gentlemen remained in post for the duration of Inverness Constabulary's existence, and it was in turn merged into the new Northern Constabulary when the Scottish Police Service was regionalised on 16th May 1975.In the meantime, Mr Sorley was awarded the Queen's Police Medal (QPM) for Distinguished Service in the 1971 New Year's Honours. The new Northern Constabulary was made up of three Forces: Inverness, Ross & Sutherland, and the 'old' Northern (Caithness, Orkney and Shetland), and the Chief Constable of each of these forces applied for the post of Chief Constable in respect of the new regional force. Mr Donald B Henderson, Chief of the 'old' Northern, was the successful candidate, and the other candidates, Mr McClure and Mr Kenneth Ross (Ross & Sutherland) took up supernumerary posts as Assistant Chief Constable as from the merger date. Mr Sorley had decided not to apply for the Chief Constable's post in the new force, but he did apply for the post of DEPUTY Chief Constable. He was appointed Deputy Chief Constable of the new force, a position he held until he retired on pension in 1981 at the age of 65.As Chief Constable of Inverness Burgh Police, he was in charge of the overall running of the force. As Deputy Chief Constable, his responsibilities included Operational Command of the force and standing in for the Chief Constable, as well as being the Disciplinary Authority, authorising and overseeing internal investigations into officers' conduct. He would also represent the force at meetings of the Association of Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS), and would have been nominated to represent ACPOS at some UK National Police Meetings. It is also worthy of pointing out that Inverness Burgh Police was the last Burgh Police Force to exist in Scotland. Created in 1847, it survived a number of attempts over the years by the Government to merge it with Inverness-shire Constabulary until it was finally merged in 1968, a full year after the remaining (larger) Burgh police forces in central Scotland had been merged with surrounding County Constabularies. Thereafter only the County Forces, and the four City forces (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee) remained – before all were merged into the 8 (current) Regional Forces in 1975. NOTE: The two clearly identifiable Police medal ribbons being worn are the:white /navy / white / navy / white: QPM (Queens Police Medal) and the white/blue/white/ very wide royal blue /white/blue/ white: PLS&GC (Police Long Service & Good Conduct) medal, awarded to police officers of all ranks after satisfactory completion of 22 years of service.(The other two medal ribbons are liable to be awards for war service). Mr Sorley was the final Chief Officer of Inverness, Burgh Police (and was the only DCC of Inverness Constabulary, and the FIRST DCC of Northern Constabulary). His predecessors in Inverness bUrgh Police were:04.09.1847 - 03.05.1854 DAVID ANDERSON (Supt) 31.07.1854 - 13.05.1872 JOHN SUTHERLAND (Supt) (Died December 1873) 16.06.1872 - 08.01.1880 THOMAS WYNESS (Supt)(ex Supt Elgin)(later CC Abdn) 25.02.1880 - 30.04.1908 JOHN MACDONALD (Supt, CC wef 1892)(ex Insp @ Alloa?) 01.05.1908 - 03.06.1908 KENNETH MACPHERSON (Acting CC)(Insp & DCC) 04.06.1908 - 31.12.1935 JOHN MACNAUGHTON (CC)(ex Supt & DCC of Dundee City) 01.01.1936 - 25.01.1936 WILLIAM J DALGLEISH (Acting CC)(Insp & DCC) 26.01.1936 - 19.10.1942 ALEXANDER NEVILLE (CC)(ex Insp Kilmarnock Burgh) On 01.05.1942 the Magistrates of the Royal Burgh of Inverness suspended Mr Neville, as a result of many complaints made by members of the Force.
