| 説明 | Two weeks ago I abandoned my walk along the Mister Way due to the high flood levels at Stamford Bridge. Bit of a shame as the end of the walk at York Minster is only ten miles from here. Today I have driven down from Beverely and will park-up and finish the walk taking in the pleasure of an overnight wild-camp en-route.The invading Norwegian King Harald Hardrada got a bit of a surprise at Stamford Bridge in 1066 when the English King Harald arrived unannounced, inflicting heavy losses on these over-sexed and over-here Viking chancers. Alas his victory so weakened the English forces, urgent contingency depriving them of any opportunity for celebration by the pressing need to march south to Hastings to fight William of Normandy at that much the more famous battle of 1066.This aggressive Inn sign hangs close to the 18th. century Stamford Bridge over the river Derwent and salutes the story that a giant Viking axeman blocked the crossing, and single-handedly held up the English army. Legend has it that he killed at least 40 of King Harald's men however he was eventually persuaded to desist by an English soldier who got under the bridge in a half-barrel boat and thrust his spear up through the laths in the bridge inflicting a mortal wound. Ouch! Today Stamford Bridge is proud of its Viking connections and I'm happy to vouch for the peaceful nature of the folks in the Swordsman Inn where not a spear got within a gnats crochet of me kilt.... |
