My photos are FREE for anyone to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks - NONE OF MY PICTURES ARE HDR.This is a carving of the Aztec Calendar (Sun Stone) I carved approximately 30 years ago and hangs in my Rec Room, it is 91.44 cm (36in) in diameter and 3.05cm (1.38in) thick.Some idiots believe that a cataclysmic event (end of the world) will occur on 21 December 2012. This date is regarded as the end date of a 5,125 year long cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar. If the world does end, I guess I am the idiot but who will know I was wrong, LOL.The TV show about this event often showed the Aztec Calendar not the Mayan Calendar (it has changed in the last editions) - they can't even show the correct calendar let along know what it predicts - I am going for a coffee in the morning like usual and still have the house decorated for Christmas.......------------------------------------------------------------------------------Aztec Calendar or Sun Stone was carved during the reign of the 6th Aztec monarch in 1479 and dedicated to the Aztec deity: the sun. It has both mythological and astronomical significance. It weighs 25 tons, 3.66 meters (12ft) in diameter, and 9.1 meters (3ft) thick. Mexico City, MexicoThe solar calendar of 365 days was inseparable from the Sacred Round, the priests used of 260 days primarily for divinatory purposes. The method of naming the individual days consisted in the combination of twenty pictorial signs with the numbers one to thirteen. Each of the day signs also bears an association with one of the four cardinal directions. The 20 day signs are arrayed in a circle surrounding the central face. On December 17th, 1790 the stone was discovered, buried in the "Zocalo" (the main square) of Mexico City. Afterwards it was embedded in the wall of the Western tower of the metropolitan Cathedral, where it remained until 1885. At that time it was transferred to the national Museum of Archaeology and History by order of the then President of the Republic, General Porfirio Diaz. |
