説明Thanksgiving Day Drive (Ride-by-Shooting): Dirt / Graveled Road across from No Point Farm on St. Jerome's Neck Road that leads to St. Jerome Creek in Dameron, Maryland on Thursday afternoon, 26 November 2009 by Elvert Barnes PhotographyVisit Elvert Barnes THANKSGIVING DAY 2009 WITH THE FAMILY / ST. MARY'S COUNTY / SOUTHERN MARYLAND docu-project at elvertbarnes.com/SMC-MD-26November2009Former property of my grandparents Thomas Walter and Violet Emma Dove BiscoeThis "new' barn was built by my grandfather during my early teen years (mid - late 60's).While the foundation was layed black carpenter William Barnes who later contracted out to Mr. ____ Hewitt who was a well respected white carpenter in the area the barn's major construction was performed by my grandfather and older brother, Nelson Barnes, over a period of several years (perhaps 1965 - 1967).In fact, it was Nelson who actually is responsable for most of the barn's construction. There once was an old barn and corn house that had been on the property since before my birth, in 1953, that stood in closer proximity to the house. Both were demolished by the new owners (Cappers) shortly after my grandmother moved from the farm in the early 80's. Leaving what the family referred to as the new barn.As one of the largest black land owners on St. Jerome's Neck Road Walter and Violet Biscoe were well respected. And always held their own. My grandfather would sometimes tell the story that in order for him to purchase the land, a Jewish man agreed to purchase it first. And then resell it to him. And it was not uncommon for KKK members who lived on nearby farms to threaten my grandparents by leaving white crosses in the woods, or carved into trees.Read 7 December 2009 Elvert Barnes FREEDOM blog / National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) Memory Book posting at elvertbarnes-freedom.blogspot.com/2009/12/thomas-walter-v...see a December 2004 photo with details at www.flickr.com/photos/perspective/43822224And here is the history of the farm at www.flickr.com/photos/perspective/sets/957909And a December 2004 photo of me with more info at www.flickr.com/photos/perspective/43827661
