説明 | A real small town offers more than nostalgia. It provides variety, energy, and a certain feeling of belonging. That feeling is not limited to just residents; it affects visitors as well. Maynard certainly has variety. Several bars and coffee shops serve beverages night and day. The town has a pool hall, live theatre, a venue for live music, an outdoor farmer’s market in the summer, and a wonderful parade in winter. And then there are the restaurants…Maynard’s restaurants run the gamut from McDonald’s to the Monsoon, an Indian restaurant that won my heart, despite my erroneous impression that I didn’t like Indian food. In addition, Maynard is home to two Thai restaurants, a Korean restaurant, a steak house, a grill, a Chinese restaurant, two wonderful ice cream places, and other food establishments that defy categorization. All told, Maynard epitomizes why so many yearn for small-town life. Speak to residents, and they will extol certain virtues, such as the theatre or the services. Ask what they value most, however, and they all say the same thing: they like the sense of community. Here's a perfect example. Last year, I drove to Maynard on election day and held a placard for a friend who was running for office. Next to me stood half a dozen other people, young and old, holding different placards for their candidates. For four hours, all us chatted and took turns going for coffee. And when that coffee filled our bladders, we took turns holding each other’s placards to allow each other bathroom breaks. Three or four times an hour, someone would drive by and honk and wave. Not one person jeered, catcalled, or belittled any officeholder or candidate. What a splendid afternoon! |
