| 説明 | Born in 1815, Philip Kearney of New Jersey was a Union General during the American Civil War.Kearney, who lost his arm in the Mexican War and commanded French troops in the Italian War, reportedly had the most combat experience of any General of either side at the start of the Civil War. He took command of the First New Jersey Brigade, and trained it to be an effective fighting force. In 1862, he commanded a division in the Virginia Peninsular Campaign and the Second Battle of Bull Run (Manassas, VA). Kearney was killed in the Battle of Chantilly (VA) on September 1, 1862 when he inadvertently rode into Confederate lines, and was shot as he turned away. Kearney's body lay in an unmarked vault in Manhattan's Trinity Churchyard (NY) until 1912 when his re-burial with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery (VA) was authorized. Today his grave is marked by one of the only two equestrian statues in the Cemetery.www.civilwar.orgImage by Ron Cogswell on October 13, 2012, using a Nikon D80 and minor Photoshop effects.DSC_0057 |
