| 説明 | In Mozambique, velvet beans are mainly used in times of food scarcity. Processing is elaborate in order to remove (part of) the many toxins in the beans. Once prepared, the food is quite tasty but looks unattractive due to the dark muddy appearance. A big plus when comparing velvet beans with most other tropical beans - the beans are not attacked by weevils or other post-harvest insects and so can be stored for several years when needed. This picture shows the variablity in local varieties in Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique. Wild Mucuna pruriens often hybridizes spontaneously with cultivated velvet bean and intermediate forms are not rare. |
