| 説明 | Two common symbols in medieval churches combined, both related to fertility and the fruitfulness of the earth, although they are often represented in complex and ambiguous images. The Green Man depicted here hardly appears benign, showing a mouthful of teeth in addition to his rather wild-eyed expression. The Mermen bear clubs and could be engaged in battle with one another, but not, I think, necessarily so, Note that their shields resemble flowers, and there are objects or matter issuing from their heads that differ: the one on the right is "wave-like," while that on the left is more easily read as "foliate." [See the other Green Man/Merman bench end in this group(www.flickr.com/photos/hunky_punk/7973944930), and note, also, the scale-like cap that "connects" the Green Man to the Merman in each carving.] |
