| 説明 | Today's climb to Scafell summit by way of the Foxes Tarn route will complete my round of Bill Birkett's list of of 530 summits with a minimum height of 1,000' all described in his: Complete Lakeland Fells. His book is a fine publication and an ideal companion for coffee-table, bothy fireside or any of Lakeland's myriad dizzying bar-stools. In short; a book in size ill-suited to the harsher environs of the great outdoors, though few others so comprehensivley celebrate felldom's freemasonry of the high places or test their noviciates with such tasks of stubborness! Or so it ocurrs to me while trying to decide if I should take the darn thing with me or not. Wouldn't it be nice to have a summit picture; Birkett book in hand, beneath yet one more bigging-it-up cheesy grin? But naah, I'll leave it behind and travel the lighter. The route is stratghtforward from the bottom of Hardknott Pass up Eskdale over Great Moss and up Foxes Tarn gulley to the top and then a pleasant downhill wander taking in the souther top of Slight Side. A wonderful sunny day, so lets get on with it.... On the approach march to Lingcove Bridge the route passes the magnificent cliff of Heron Crag, fully 250' of clean verticle rock with a range of wonderful climbs. The classic route (in my day anyway, but things can change), was Gormenghast first climbed by Les Brown & A. Atkinson in 1961 and 23 years later I managed it myself. Its a hard, "Hard Very Severe" route going straight up the central flake and up the blank wall above. I remember it as an exhillerating climb, which is technical mountaineering language for " friggin scary", but I was going well that year notching up a pleasing list of Lakeland ascents in that long dry sunny summer. Happy days indeed, now I pass routes like this and marvel that I ever even thought about so much as trying to climb them! |
