| 説明 | These beautiful young Burmese girls, with their pink robes and red parasols, are nuns of the Theravada (meaning “the Ancient Teaching”) order of Buddhism. Their pink robes set them apart from monks who wear bright saffron-colored robes. In a line of descending seniority based on who was ordained first, they are about to set off on their daily rounds of collecting alms.Theirs isn’t an easy life. Their convents are often located in less desirable locations and don’t always receive proper maintenance. Collecting alms provides food and clothing for the nuns. They must follow many rules, 348 of them, as opposed to the 250 Buddhist monks must adhere to. Equality with monks is beyond their wildest dreams.Photograph by Staffan Scherz.Source: Michael Clemmer / Flickr photo of the day |
