My photos are FREE for anyone to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks - NONE OF MY PICTURES ARE HDR.The rainwater collector or impluvium, is an ingenious system that ensures the capture (with the slightly sloping surface of the courtyard) then filtering storm water at a central basin furnished with horseshoe arches sculpted in white marble. Freed from its impurities, the water flows into an underground cistern supported by 7m (23ft) high pillars. In the courtyard there are also several water wells some of which are placed side by side.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Mosque of Uqba, also known as the Great Mosque of Kairouan, is one of the most important mosques in Tunisia. Built by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi from 670 AD at the founding of the city of Kairouan, the mosque is spread over a surface area of 9,000 square meters and it is one of the oldest places of worship in the Islamic world. |
