| 説明 | Florence Martus (1868 – 1943) Her father was an ordnance sergeant at Fort Pulaski on Cockspur Island (GA), where she was born.Florence, aka "the Waving Girl", took it upon herself to be the unofficial greeter of all ships that entered and left the Port of Savannah (GA) between 1887 and 1931. A few years after she began waving at passing sailors, Florence moved in with her brother, a light keeper, at his small white cottage about 5 miles up the river from Fort Pulaski. From her rustic home on Elba Island, a tiny piece of land in the Savannah River near the Atlantic Ocean, Florence would wave a handkerchief by day and a lantern by night. According to legend, not a ship was missed in her forty-four years on watch. The statue shown above of Florence by the sculptor Felix de Weldon was erected in 1974 in Morrell Park on Savannah's historic riverfront.Felix de Weldon was an internationally recognized American sculptor. He is probably most famous for his towering sculpture of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington (VA).De Weldon devoted his life's work to immortalizing those who have left an indelible influence on humanity. He died in 2003 at the age of 96 and was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery (VA)Image by Ron Cogswell on July 18, 2012, using a Nikon D80 with minor Photoshop effects.DSC_0173 V2 |
