| 説明 | I'm imagining Phineas seeing this photo a dozen years from now and asking "what's this mean"? OK here it goes... There was this phenomenon where people made fun of other people for being "hipsters": people who acted like they were cool because they liked obscure things that nobody else knew about. And later when everyone else likes that thing (and it's no longer obscure) the "hipster" says "I did that before it was cool". Hipsters are stereotyped as wearing things that at first glance might look ugly or awkward, but were in fact carefully chosen to contradict stereotypes of "good looking" (in other words: ironically unfashionable) -- including thick-rimmed glasses and moustaches. This ended up becoming a fashion in itself. The book is by a Japanese author, which would seem very obscure to English-speaking people in the US. (He's actually a best-selling author in Japan.) Thus, reading the book is a hipster affectation of "obscurity" (but is actually conforming to a type).Of course, nobody self-labels themself as a hipster because it implies you're conforming to a type. It's like the set of all people that claim they aren't part of any set. Huh, this is sounding a bit like Russell's paradox. Maybe we should wait *two* dozen years before you read this explanation. |
