説明A satellite view of Washington, D.C. and the Virginia suburbs, including places where I lived and worked. North is at the top of this image. The Potomac River flows from north to south in this photo, though its general direction is northwest to southeast. The Potomac divides the District of Columbia (right) from Virginia. The Anacostia River flows into the Potomac from the northeast. This image was taken around 1975. One notable feature which is missing is the extension of highway I-66 from the Beltway in Virginia through Fairfax County and Arlington to the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge over the Potomac. This road was approved in 1977 and completed in 1982.In "false color," vegetation appears red and water is black. False color is supposed to show other features more clearly than a normal photograph. The Capital Beltway (I-495), which makes a circle around the Washington, parallels the west and south edges of the photograph. It crosses the Potomac at the Cabin John (north) and Woodrow Wilson Bridges. I-66 comes from the west. It was later extended into Washington, crossing the Potomac on Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. The bridge touches part of Theodore Roosevelt Island, the only island in this photo. Shirley Highway (I-395) runs from the Beltway to the 14th Street Bridge, and is a main commuting route. It is I-95 south of the Beltway, part of the interstate highway from Maine to Florida. The Mall (now National Mall) is the long rectangular area extending east from the Potomac. The red area has the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. The narrow black strip is the Reflecting Pool between the two monuments. East of the red area, the Mall has the Smithsonian Institution and other museums. The U.S. Capitol is just beyond the Mall. The White House is in the red area just north of the Mall. Downtown Washington is north of the Mall area. National Airport (now Reagan National Airport) was built on reclaimed land on the Virginia side of the Potomac in 1939-1941. Arlington National Cemetery is the large red area west of Potomac River bridges. The Pentagon is recognizable by its shape, near the end of the 14th Street Bridge. I worked in Rosslyn in 1965-1970. Rosslyn is part of Arlington, Virginia, near the Potomac River and Theodore Roosevelt Island. I worked in two offices in downtown Washington in 1977-1992. Two notes mark my later homes. I lived in Annandale, Virginia in 1977-1987, near the left edge of the map. I lived in Arlington, Virginia, near the center of the map, in 1987-1994.My first experience with Washington came in the spring of 1957. I studied in a special political science program at American University, near the top center. This image covers an area of about 15 miles (24 km) north-south, and 18 miles (30 km) east-west.
