| 説明 | The Eucalyptus is an Australian immigrant to California - with a couple of different family members. The best known is probably the very large "Gum Tree" - well known for its propensity to drop heavy limbs on hot days without any warning except for an explosive report as it happens - much to the consternation and possible continued welfare of anybody underneath. They are also a real fire danger when planted in groves because of their oil content and propensity for the trunks to explode when they catch fire. This picture is of a smaller, less dangerous, and prettier member of the family, named "Rosea". It is a very hard wood and very heavy (it sinks in water) with a very rough and almost black bark on the main trunk. In spring and going on into summer it provides a distinctive display of red or pink flowers which attract myriads of bees which use the nectar as a source for a very pungent honey with a marked menthol sub-flavor. (The leaves of this tree are sometimes distilled for use in the process of making mentholated products) |
