| 説明 | This small building, whose function is unknown to me, is in the churchyard of Canongate Kirk [Church] in Edinburgh, near the eastern end of the Royal Mile (also known here as The Canongate). It appears to have been built around two tombstones and part of a third. The top of the door frame is engraved with the inscription "In Memoriam - Sir Francis Vernon Thomson - Baronet - 1953 - Laus Deo".Sir Francis, the 1st Baronet of Monken Hadley [in the County of Hertford], C.B.E., lived from 1881-1953 and is buried in the New Southgate Cemetery in London (www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=45476289), not here. I have no idea why this building (or its doorway?) has been dedicated to his memory (London and Hertfordshire are a long way from Edinburgh), but I thought the red door and black tombstones made an interesting composition. |
