| 説明 | Amit and I are riding back from Dunwich. Last night we left London at 20:30 and sat off with approximately 1500 other cyclists to Dunwich on the East cost. We rode 110 miles through the night at got to Dunwich at 05:00 this morning. after scoffing some beans on toast we turned around and set off back to London. We're 170 miles in to the ride now and we're pretty tired. Amit is getting 15 minutes sleep but I'm still buzzing on caffiene tablets so I'm writing this instead. Now it's time to wake Amit up and get moving again. My GPS logThe paragraph above was written on my phone while Amit was trying to sleep. Below is his unedited account of the event:We had a 5 strong peloton at the start in london fields. Phil, me, 2 Gregarios and one of their sons. After obligatory pints were consumed (1 each and a government juice on the rocks for Phil) we got on our way at 8.30. It was the busiest i'd ever seen it on the way out of london. Ross got a puncture soon after we left (the only one of the trip) so we stopped at a petrol station while he promptly fixed it.Rolling out into essex we picked up a 6th man Tim, who ended up riding with us the whole way. We were gruppo compacto for the next 30 miles until we saw a pub stop selling teas outside. There were alot more apparent stops this year. Teas consumed and half sandwiches eaten we were quickly on our way. After 60 miles, at the homebase roundabout near sudbury we stopped at a makeshift feed stop run by the local bike shop. Bottles filled by a lovely lady with a hosepipe and more sarnies eaten we were soon on our way again. On numerous occasions throughout the nite, the infamous Dulwich Paragon train came flying past. This time we jumped on the back. A while was spent chasing wheels out of corners until it was deemed this group was too fast for our motley crew of lowly club riders, super commuterman Phil, ironman Ross, his 'on trend' son Ryan and Tim the middle-aged cyclist. At 85 miles it finally came. The impromptu bacon butty stop in someones front garden. This was the one Simon had been waiting for, asking me if the magic box said we were close about every 5 mins, while we were setting a steady pace at the front. The bacon butties and a lil sit down was much needed as we were beginning to tire.Dawn soon appeared and the last 30 miles were a breeze. We got to the beach at 5 (i think), a warm orange sunrise to greet us. There were maybe 100 people already there. We queued for the cafe and ate a crappy breakfast. It was a surprise to see Tim (another Gregario) on the table opposite us. He had turned up to the ride on his own and ridden with a fast group, having arrived 30mins earlier. Once i'd forced my sub-par beans down (this was not the time to leave food. Phil and i had plans!) we headed down to the beach for a look. Phil being Phil broke out into stretch and i soon followed. Muscles now loose(r) we decided to not hang around getting cold and get on our way, for Phil and I were riding back to London! As soon as we left dunwich we passed people coming the other way pretty constantly. It felt quite good having people seeing we were riding back, especially when some hipster girl shouted "hardcoreeeeeeeeeeee" at us coming the other way. The bacon butty stop looked like they were tidying up just as we went passed. I think the last person we saw was at around 9am about 30 miles out. We were having a sit down at the side of the road and this dude stopped up, concerned he was going to miss the last coach at 1pm! We also saw two guys on a tandem dressed as mario and luigi. The wind was fairly strong on the exposed bits, but we made quite steady progress. We came across about 5 others cycling back during the course of the morning. 1 was asleep at the side of the road. We yoyo'ed with another two separate riders and saw another pair together in the distance but never caught them. At one point we caught up with one of the lone riders and he was suffering so we told him to jump on the back. He rode with us for a while until I decided I thought he was being a bit racist (after saying I must be doctor or a IT worker when we stopped for a pee) and picked up the pace a little to drop him. Its funny how your mind works/overreacts when you're sleep deprived/tired.We stopped about twice before our lunch stop at a tearoom in Castle Hendingham, including me going for a shit in the woods. My stomach was playing up all day! I had a 15 minute kip on a piece of grass after lunch. Phil didnt sleep, thou I found out after that he'd been dropping high5 caffeinated tablets in his water since his 3rd bottle the night before. He must've been wired! (they have 65mg of caffeine per tablet). The last 20 miles through epping and such werent very nice as there was a lot of traffic and one straight road. My left foot was in agony by now. Not sure whats wrong with my shoes/cleats but I always seem to get feet issues past 100 miles. Need to work on that one if we're going to continue this theme of long rides (yes, people's intentions for a Super Randoneur Series next year were discussed in the delirium of the night). We got to London Fields around 5pm, thinking there might be a group of return riders having a special party but there was none. We sat on a bench for a while so I could eat my victory apple I carried around for 240 miles and then went to Euston and home for me.Total mileage for London Fields to Dunwich to London Fields on my garmin trip computer was 225 miles. Plus the ride from edgware, the ride to euston and the ride back to edgware, it makes 250 miles. A bitty 400k! |
