In his own hand, scratched into the wall of his cell, a small room that once held about twelve people (the central door in the adjacent photo).Arrigo Paladini did not, in fact, die here. Through sheer good luck the truck he was loaded onto on 4 June 1944, the day of Rome's liberation, didn't start, and he was sent back into his cell. Another truckload of prisoners, whose truck did start, wasn't so lucky. They were all shot at La Storta, in the north of Rome, as the Allies were pouring into the city from the south. |
