説明 | The William A. Gill Building in St. Louis (1910). Gill purchased the land and built the building as an investment. It was modeled off of Louis Curtiss' 1909 Boley Building in Kanses City. Gill opened a small jewelry store and a hotel. The Gill Building was one of the few buildings in downtown St. Louis with white terra cotta, contrasting with the popular St. Louis red brick. Pollution was so high that white brick couldn't be used, but a good rainstorm could clean terra cotta. The massive Railway Exchange Building (left) was built only a few years later, owing to the Gill Building's influence in using the material. |
