| 説明 | Christopher Whall's depiction of St George and St Edmund as part of the South African War Memorial in the Chapter House, Gloucester Cathedral. This is part of the six lights in the window which refer to "Valour". In Whall's notes he writes-"St George. The Patron of Soldiers" and "St Edmund-King of the East Angles and Martyr, A.D.870.- Slain by the Danes-(One of the Patrons of English Valour all through the Middle Ages)"Whall explains that the idea of the window is the "Spirit of the Lord" (Isaiah xi, 2), divided into the two great branches - COUNSEL and MIGHT. Whall divides the window into three great groups of six lights. The central group depicts COUNSEL, the group on the left DISCIPLINE and the group on the right VALOUR. St Alban and St Edmund appear in the upper right side grouping along with St George. (Taken from notes on the wall of the Chapter House just by the window) |
