| 説明 | It was such a nice day, that we headed to Weymouth and Portland. Lucky to have blue skys as well after previous rainy days.Gloucester Row near The Esplanade in Weymouth.This is Gloucester House at 96 The Esplanade (to the right of the Royal Arcade).Gloucester House is believed to have been built in 1790 as a rather grand residence becoming a hotel as late as the 1960's. Nos 93-95 (qv) remainto the left, Nos 98 & 99 (qv) to the right, on the corner withKing Street, has been replaced.EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, attic and basement, each 3 windows, allplain sashes. Each has 2 hipped dormers. The first-flooropenings are taken down to floor level with a balcony, and theground-floor windows are arched, in rustication, withvoussoirs. To the left of each an arched opening has a 6-panelfielded door under a fanlight (plain to No.97), on 5+2 nosedsteps. A full-width c1820s verandah on paired cast-ironbrackets has decorative balustrade, and vertical decorativestandards carrying a tent hood. Moulded cornice, blockingcourse and parapet; 6 brick stacks.INTERIOR: not inspected.SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: each house has the original spearheadrailings and returns, and a gate to stone steps to thebasements.This pair, which formerly had unrendered brickwork to the topstorey, is as built, except for the loss of glazing bars.(RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 355).Listing NGR: SY6802679482 |
