説明 | Built by the Normans, Chepstow castle remained a power base in symbol and fact right up till the English Civil War when the attack capabilities of cannonballs demonstrated vulnerability. In 1645 following a long bombardment the castle capitulated to the Parliamentary forces. Following the restoration of the Monarchy Henry Marten, one-time member of Parliament for Berkshire, was imprisoned here for many years prior to his own execution, an irony of sorts given that his was one of the 58 signatures on the Charles Ist death warrant, Marten's Tower in the castle still bears his name and I wonder as he watched the ebb and flow of the Wye from the window whether he pondered the tides that so affect the affairs of men? Stuff happens. |
